Time Out
– The Creativity Booster: Part 2
For this article, I am addressing the statement that I hear time and time again from many entrepreneurs: “I’m self-employed – by myself and all the time.”
This phrase implies that entrepreneurs have no free time and are constantly working -more than is good for them.
Why is this and what can be done about it?
An entrepreneur generally never runs out of work. There is always something to do. Additionally, there are no fixed vacation days like there are for employees. Due to this, entrepreneurs often take much fewer vacation days than employees and miss out on important relaxation breaks.
Most entrepreneurs say that there are important activities which are scheduled and that they must personally be there. This, however, is a misconception.
To be able to work successfully as an entrepreneur and, above all, to have good ideas, regular time-outs are absolutely essential.

A long weekend is usually not enough. At least a week’s vacation two to three times per year is recommended in order to truly relax. It’s important to note that entrepreneurs tend to read their e-mails during their holidays so that they can react to emergencies. As a result, they are not able to really let go and rest because their mind cannot switch off completely.
Work is left undone during the holiday. However, work is quicker and easier after a vacation. This means that backlogs of work can be done more easily – and work is fun again.
Here’s what you can do as an entrepreneur:
- Get organized so that your company can easily manage without you for 10 days.
- Plan specific holidays throughout the year. You can also set a fixed number of vacation days that you want to use by the end of the year.
- Book your vacations in advance. There is then less risk that you will postpone it due to urgent work.
You will see that your company will run better if you take regular breaks. You will make better decisions and enjoy your work more.
