The systemic constellation

– successful problem solving for companies

In this article, I would like to take a closer look at systemic constellations. Many people are familiar with systemic constellations within the field of family constellations. Systemic constellations, however, can also be used successfully in in the business world.

The main purpose of a systemic constellation is to recognize how a system as a whole works. A system can be how a person interacts with their environment (family, partner, friends, pets, work colleagues, employers, business partners) or how a company interacts within its environment (owners, investors, employees, customers, suppliers, cooperation partners).

A systemic constellation can be implemented in a variety of ways. It uses people and/or objects to represent different aspects of the company and it’s corporate environment.

A constellation follows the following structure:

  1. The topic of the constellation is defined. What issue needs to be addressed and what is expected from the constellation?
  2. It is then decided which areas of the business is to be worked on (people, contracts, companies, departments, etc.) in this specific constellation.
  3. A representative, either a person or an object, is then chosen for each part of the system.
  4. The representatives are physically positioned in a way that is most appropriate for the current system. This enables things to be visualized three-dimensionally.
  5. Depending on the constellation, this step can be executed in different forms. For example, people who act as representatives can be questioned and have the ability to answer. If the representatives are objects, interactions can be made through sound (ex. musical instruments) or positioning.
  6. By changing the position of the representatives, changes are made in the system. This makes it possible to discover the best options.
  7. When all important issues have been addressed and a solution has been reached, the constellation is completed. The representatives are then released from their respective roles.

There are many benefits to a systemic constellation. Connections and/or obstacles become visible showing different options and in turn, solutions, to the issue at hand.

Here are a few examples:

  • If there are problems within a company, the systemic constellation can be used to find out where the core problem lies. Different approaches to solutions can be found and assessed to see if they will work for the desired outcome.
  • The company wants to collaborate with other companies. There are also various possibilities to see what this will look like. A constellation can be used to understand which options best suits the company and what the best solutions are.
  • Different departments are not working well together. By utilizing a systemic constellation, the dynamics between the departments can become more clear and problems can then be solved.
